  • description: Extended course now available to purchase from here: https://ko-fi.com/s/08a417c2d7 Welcome to Day 3 (Final Day) of the Total Beginner FreeCAD 1.1 Course for 3D Printing πŸŽ‰ In this lesson, we move beyond single-part models and learn how to design multi-body, print-in-place assemblies that work straight off the print bed. DAY 1: https://youtu.be/S2ySQaKKiHA DAY 2: https://youtu.be/XyFH579w62M DAY 3: https://youtu.be/LyEaUOZ7rhM This tutorial focuses on multi-body workflows in FreeCAD 1.1, showing how to design parts as if they are already assembled, even without using a dedicated assembly workbench. You’ll learn how two or more bodies can interact, pivot, and lock together while still being exported and 3D printed as a single object. We start by creating a rotational joint using two separate bodies, carefully designing clearances so the parts don’t fuse together during printing. You’ll learn how to: - Design print-in-place hinges - Designing in tolerances for moving parts - Use symmetry and mid-plane modeling - Create integrated joints that can rotate but not separate Next, we introduce one of the most important tools for multi-body design in FreeCAD: SubShape Binder. You’ll see how to: - Reference geometry from another body safely - Build mating parts that update automatically - Avoid broken sketches and solver errors - Design parts that adapt when dimensions change We then cover Part Design Clones, explaining why directly transforming bodies can break references, and we will use the clones to: - Open assemblies for 3D printing - Add chamfers and fillets without affecting originals - Continue alternative design workflows safely Once the pivoting mechanism is complete, we extend the model into a fully functional locking clip, adding: - Clearance pockets - Fillets and chamfers for strength and printability - Adjustable angles and snap-fit geometry - A tunable locking mechanism for tight or loose fits Finally, we prepare the model for 3D printing by: - Opening up the assembly for safe 3D printing using clones and transform - Creating a compound in the Part Workbench - Exporting as 3MF - Importing into the slicer with supports enabled - Explaining post-print freeing of moving joints By the end of this video, you’ll understand how to design functional, print-in-place mechanisms in FreeCAD 1.1 using professional CAD workflows perfect for real-world 3D printing projects. πŸ”§ Software: FreeCAD 1.1 πŸ–¨οΈ Focus: Print-in-Place, Multi-Body Design, Assemblies, Functional 3D Prints 🎯 Skill Level: Beginner ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 – Day 3 Overview: Print-in-Place Assemblies 00:14 – What Is Multi-Body Design in FreeCAD? 00:27 – Print-in-Place Hinges & Assemblies Explained 01:05 – Project Overview: Pivot Joint β†’ Locking Clip 01:25 – Creating the First Body & Rotational Pivot 02:04 – Sketching Arcs, Clearances & Constraints 04:15 – Padding Symmetrically & Mid-Plane Modeling 04:47 – Creating Clearance Hoops for Rotation 06:32 – Naming Bodies & Preparing for Multi-Body Work 06:58 – Referencing Geometry with SubShape Binder 08:42 – External Geometry & Binder Best Practices 12:30 – Creating the Mating Body & Clearances 15:06 – Mirroring Features Using Base Planes 16:13 – Editing One Body to Drive the Assembly 17:27 – Why Transforming Bodies Can Break Sketches 18:47 – Using Part Design Clones Safely 21:04 – Creating a Compound for 3D Printing 22:25 – Exporting as STL / 3MF & Slicer Setup 23:15 – Post-Print Joint Freeing & Handling 23:48 – Extending the Assembly into a Locking Clip 33:48 – Final Print-in-Place Workflow & Wrap-Up #FreeCAD , #CAD , #3DPrinting Journey with me and Patreon https://www.patreon.com/mangojellysolutions Donate: https://ko-fi.com/mang0 https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/darrenbestone Udemy: Freecad Ultimate Beginners Extended Version https://www.udemy.com/course/freecad-ultimate-beginners-extended-version/?referralCode=F7A41AFE83C33AD267CB Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUWhaOxsRk_5oPPq00_Y7Dw?sub_confirmation=1 Browse my Redbubble Shop: http://MangojellyLabs.redbubble.com Blog: https://mangojellysolutions.blogspot.com/
